At least 27 people were charred to death and several others injured after a bus plunged into a gorge and caught fire in Bihar’s Motihari on Thursday afternoon. According to reports, the driver of the bus, which was on its way to Delhi from Muzaffarpur, tried to save a two-wheeler when he lost control of the vehicle. The death toll is expected to rise, news agency ANI reported.
The incident happened on national highway 28 near Moga Hotel in Kotwa area around 3 pm.
Police officials said the passengers who managed to come out of the bus had been admitted to a hospital.
Relief and rescue work was reportedly hampered by rains in the region.
Expressing grief over the horrific accident, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar said the government authorities would extend all help to the affected families.
Meanwhile, Bihar Disaster Management and Relief Minister Dinesh Chandra Yadav announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for the kin of the deceased persons.
“It is a really sad incident. There is a provision to give compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of dead in such cases and it will be given,” he said.
